LETS DO THIS YOUR WAY

How To Legally Change Your Name After the Wedding

You are planning your wedding and you have decided to change your name to your husband’s, but have you planned what you need to do before and after the wedding regarding the needed documents to initiate the change? If you wish to change your name, you need to make changes promptly after the wedding.

Here is a wedding name change checklist and to-do list of agencies and companies you may need to notify of your name change.

What To Do Before the Wedding

Tell your employer (or HR contact/department) so that they can begin to make the necessary changes so that they will be in place when you return from your wedding. They may need to change your voice mail, your email, contact information on their website, and your business cards. They can also gather the paperwork you will need to complete after you say "I do".

When booking your honeymoon plans book using your maiden name. You will not have the documentation in time with your new name on it, so you will need your tickets to match the documentation you do have. Carrying your marriage certificate with you is not enough to meet the government ID requirements to fly, you will need an official passport or drivers ID that matches your travel documents.

Steps To Take To Change Your Name After The Wedding

  1. Once you get a copy of your marriage license take it along with the Social Security name change form and official copies of your current identification (social security card, driver’s license or passport). If you decided to get a bit creative with your last name, such as combining your two surnames, then you will also need copies of the official legal documentation and you both will need to obtain new social security cards.

  2. Motor Vehicle Agency – You will then need to take your new social security card, official marriage license and your current driver’s license to the agency and fill out a change of name and vehicle registration. Many states may require another form of ID such as official birth certificate or US Passport. Check with your local Motor Vehicle Department for more information.

  3. US Passport – If you have a current valid US passport, and it was issued within the past year you will need to fill out form DS-5504, if your passport is older than one year, then you will need to fill out form DS-82.

Although the above will change your name for US Government agencies, you may also want to change your name with the following organizations or companies:

  • Your company’s Human Resources department. Make sure you change your W-4 to reflect your newly married status or they could be taking more taxes out than needed. Make sure they update your name as well, so that you can be credited with the proper social security benefits when you retire.

  • US Postal Service, if you have a post office box or if you changed addresses.

  • Occupational Licenses

  • Utility Companies (phone, cable, gas, electric)

  • Financial Organizations (Banks, credit cards, life & auto insurance, retirement plans, college loan repayments, mortgage, auto)

  • Medial Organizations (medical insurance, dental insurance, vision)

  • Groups or Associations you are members of

  • Voter Registration

  • BeneficiariesIf you have life insurance or other policies where there is a beneficiary and you want to name your partner as a new beneficiary, call or go online to your provider and find out how to make this change.

  • Health Care Providers

  • School / School Records

  • Subscriptions

  • Military Records / Veteran Records

  • Public Assistance

If you need to obtain a birth certificate or copy of your marriage license you can apply online for a copy

SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

What You need to Know to Marry:

-A Justice of the Peace/Celebrant must have a valid marriage license in hand to officiate or solemnize your wedding. No witnesses are required in this civil ceremony. The Justice of the Peace/Celebrant’s signature is sufficient.
--To apply for a license,
Both parties must appear jointly in person with identification in any Massachusetts City/Town Clerk’s Office.
If either is under 18 years of age, a court order must be obtained from a probate or district court.
The fee for a license varies from city/town to city/town.
Massachusetts no longer requires blood tests
There is a mandatory 3-day waiting period which can only be waived with a court order. The license or “intention to marry” is valid for 60 days from the date you file and can be used to marry in any city or town in Massachusetts. When you pick up the license, check it for accuracy or you may later be charged for corrections.
---There is no prescribed form of ceremony and no particular words are essential, but there should be evidence of a promise or contract to take each other as marital spouses.
Once you have been pronounced a married couple, the Justice of the Peace/Celebrant completes Section 20 on the license, signs it, and returns it to the city or town hall from which it was obtained.
Couples can then obtain for a fee a certified copy of their marriage license from the City/Town Clerk’s Office which issued the license.

PERFORMING WEDDING CEREMONIES IS MY PASSION ON THIS EARTH. I STILL GET GOOSE BUMPS EACH AND EVERY TIME I HAVE THE PRIVILEDGE TO PROUNOUNCE A COUPLE.

I HAVE THE DISTINCT HONOR OF BEING APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS TO OFFICIATE WEDDING CEREMONIES IN THIS STATE. I AM ALSO ABLE TO PERFORM WEDDINGS IN ALL 50 STATES, AS I AM AN ORDAINED CHRISTIAN MINISTER. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT ALL LOVE MUST BE GIVEN THE RESPECT THAT IT DESERVES. I PERFORM ALL MARRIAGE CEREMONIES WITH CARE, LOVE, CONCERN AND PURE JOY.

SOME REASONS TO CHOSE A JUSTICE OF THE PEACE:

We will be punctual, personable and professional.

We are great public speakers. Your guests will hear and understand us.  We probably won’t need a microphone, dissolve in tears, become tongue-tied or laugh hysterically.

We know what flows well in a ceremony and can provide a clear cut beginning, middle, and conclusion to your public joining. We won’t ramble on and make your guests restless.

We think on our feet for unforeseen eventualities like thunder, an inebriated guest or a wandering moose.

We will execute your paperwork in a timely and correct fashion so that your city/town hall won’t be calling you to say the license has not been properly filled out. And if you realize you spelled some name wrong and didn’t notice when you picked it up, you can easily find us in-state to complete another.

And each of us has the backing of the depth and breadth of knowledge and experience of our entire professional association. If serious illness at the last minute interferes with our duties as your officiant, we can easily call on a replacement ASAP from our membership.

YOUR CEREMONY

Special flourishes can really personalize your ceremony and add warm, happy memories as well as create fabulous photo-ops. These include the following choices. But never ever feel any pressure, a simple ceremony is always in style.

Sand Ceremony

A Sand Ceremony creates a visual representation of the merging of your two lives into one through the use of colored sand and glass containers. Some people have chosen beach sand from places significant to their relationship. This is a pretty ceremony addition and has the advantage of being safe at an outdoor wedding. Sand also works well with children.

Unity Candle

A Candle ceremony works best at indoor weddings. The Candle can represent your new marriage or the blending of your two families.

Wine Ceremony

Couples love this very popular addition. It involves a box, a bottle of wine and love letters you write to each other. It includes a hammer or battery power screwdriver and often creates spontaneous and joy filled audience reaction.

Love Letter Ceremony

This is almost the same as the Wine Ceremony with the omission of the wine for couples who do not imbibe or parks not permitting liquor.

Family Ceremony

A Family Ceremony is a wonderful way to help your children feel special on your wedding day. This follows your Ring Exchange and includes a gift to each child.

Hand Ceremony

A hand ceremony may be as simple as the gently tying of your hands together to symbolize your union in marriage or an elaborate genuine hand fasting. There is also a wonderful Reading that speaks of all the exquisite ways you will share your hands in the long years ahead.

Your Rehearsal

Most couples choose to have a rehearsal prior to the wedding. At your wedding rehearsal, I always attend, and make suggestions as necessary.

IF YOU ARE VISITING MY WEBSITE, YOU ARE AT A MINIMUM CONSIDERING A MARRIAGE. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CALL ME IMMEDIATELY AND LETS GO OVER ALL THE DETAILS...YOU CANT BOOK TOO SOON! ITS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU LIKE AND TRUST YOUR OFFICIANT, AND THATS THE FIRST PLACE TO START.
